5 STEPS TO QUIT YOUR JOB

Quitting a job can be a difficult decision, and it's important to consider your reasons for wanting to leave, as well as the potential consequences of quitting.

Here are some steps you can take to quit your job in a professional manner:

1. REFLECT ON YOUR REASONS FOR WANTING TO LEAVE

Consider whether quitting is the best decision for you and your career, and think about any potential consequences, such as the impact on your finances or your professional reputation.

If you’re struggling to make a decision, remember that there are two basic kinds of decisions you can make:

  • Type 1: Almost impossible to reverse. These are called "one-way doors." In short, figuratively jumping off a cliff. Once you make a Type 1 decision, there's no going back.

  • Type 2: Easy to reverse. These are called "two-way, or revolving, doors." While Type 2 decisions might feel momentous, with a little time and effort (often a lot less than you think) they can be reversed.

2. PLAN YOUR EXIT STRATEGY

Decide when you want to leave and how you will break the news to your employer.

It's generally considered good practice to give your employer at least two weeks' notice.

3. INFORM YOUR EMPLOYER

Schedule a meeting with your boss or HR representative to let them know that you are planning to leave.

Be prepared to explain your reasons for leaving, but try to keep the conversation positive and professional.

4. TIE UP LOOSE ENDS

Make sure you complete any outstanding work and return any company property, such as keys or equipment.

If you happened to save any personal information on your company computer, be sure to send a copy to yourself and then permanently delete it.

5. THANK YOUR COLLEAGUES

Take the time to thank your colleagues for their support and friendship during your time at the company.

Be sure to share your personal email and/or LinkedIn to stay in contact with those you trust and want to stay in contact with (personally or professionally).

Remember to be respectful and professional when quitting your job, as your reputation is important and you never know when you might need a reference from your former employer!
